What is the formula for calculating blood pressure?
BP = CO x SVR
What is the formula for CO?
CO = HR x SV
What are the non-modifiable risk factors for HTN?
Family history
Age - blood vessels lose elasticity with increased age
Gender - before middle age more common in males, after 65 more common in females d/t menopause
Race - blacks more likely to have resistant HTN, Hispanics less likely to receive tx
What are the modifiable risk factors for HTN?
Obesity
Sedentary lifestyle
High Na+ intake
High cholesterol intake
Not enough K+ intake
Heavy alcohol consumption
Tobacco use
Stress
Diabetes
What is considered normal blood pressure?
Less than 120 AND less than 80
What is considered elevated blood pressure?
120 - 129 AND Less than 80
What is considered Stage 1 High Blood Pressure?
130- 139 OR 80 - 89
What is considered Stage 2 HTN?
140 or higher OR 90 or higher
What are common target-organ damage complications of HTN?
Heart- CAD, LVH
Brain - TIA, stroke
Peripheral vascular disease - intermittent claudication
Nepherosclerosis - atrophy of tubules and destruction of glomeruli
Retinal Damage - blurred vision, vision loss
