What’s the Generational Effect?
common experiences shared by a generation
What’s Libertarianism?
ideology that advocates for minimal gov intervention into the lives of private citizens and the economy
What does Realignment mean?
switching of voter preference from one party to another
What’s the New Deal Coalition?
alignment of interest groups and voting blocs that supported the New Deal and voted for Democratic presidential candidates (1932-1960s)
What’s Dealignment?
voter abandons a party to become independent or nonvoting
What are Turnout Rates?
the number of people who voted
What are Independent Expenditures in relation to Voting and Elections?
the support or opposition of candidates that is not made in cooperation with said candidates campaign
What are Soft Money Contributions in relation to Voting and Elections?
contributions made outside the limits and prohibitions of federal law (Super PACs, 527s, etc)
What are Super PACs?
groups that can receive unlimited contributions from people (or groups) in order to finance independent expenditures and other political activity
What’s Dark Money (with 501c4 and 527 groups)?
political advertisements where you don’t know who is paying for the ad (don’t have to be reported to the Federal Election Commission, or FEC)
What’s Pluralist Theory?
people rule through interest groups
What’s Elite Theory?
the elite hold a disproportion amount of power within politics
What are Political Action Committees (PACs)?
527 organization that pools campaign contributions from members and donates said funds to campaigns for/against candidates
What are Soliday, Purposive, and Economic Incentives in regards to Interest Groups?
- soliday: a sense of belonging, associating with others
- economic (material): discounts, insurance, etc.
- purposive: provide the satisfaction of talking action for one’s beliefs/principles
