Exam 3 Flashcards
Which way does the mechanism arrow point?
the destination of the electrons
what type of electrons can move in a mechanism?
lone pair or bond
What is the charge if the atom gives up electrons?
positive
What is the charge of the atom if the atom gains electrons?
negative
What is the charge of the atom if the atom gains and loses electrons?
charge doesn’t change
What is a resonance structure?
hybrid of lewis structure where only the electrons are moving
where can we have resonance?
nonbonding electrons that are next to each other (atom without an octet or pi bonds)
How do you rank the importance on non-equivalent resonance structures?
1) satisfies the octet rule
2) least amount of charges (negative on the most EN atom)
What is meant by conjugated bonds?
adjacent pi bonds or non bonded
What does an acid do?
donate H+
What does a base do?
accept H+
What is a conjugate base?
the base that is formed in the forward reaction
Which way does the arrow go in acid/base reactions?
from the base to the H+ of the acid
What does a negative pKa value indicate?
strong acid (HCl)
What does a high pKa value indicate?
strong base
