What is a diaspora?
The dispersion of spread of a people from their origins homeland
Population that is scattered across regions which are separate from their geographic place of origin
Used in reference to people who identify with a specific geographic region, but currently reside elsewhere
What is maracatu?
-Genre associated with ceremonies of African diasporic groups in northeast Brazil
-Rhythms and instruments used in maracatu evoked its African musical roots and cited the continent of African for lyrical inspiration
-People of African descent outside the continent constantly draw on African continental forms, textures, structures, and performance practices to invoke cultural and artistic heritage
