Georges Seurat: (Sunday), 6x10 feet, doesn’t have smoothness, lots of shapes, painting what he knows (wealthy people). Uses cheureul technique- one color can change how we perceive the tone and hue of another. Uses pointillism, took 2 years to finish, everything is locked in time, no movement, really good posture, influenced by Renaissance, border stands out. Artist died at 32, he only finished 7 paintings, He was known for being OCD and fashionable.

Auguste Rodin, sculpture in France, asked to create a portal, died before it was done, fought with close friends to see their expressions, figures coming out of emptiness, this is a psychological hell, Dante’s Devine Comedy (souls of the damned) stand at the entrance, pointing to the inscription “Abandon hope ye all who enter here”, you should pause and be afraid when looking at it.

Henri de Toulousse-Lautrec, he never grew past 4’8, loved the moulin rouge and did advertisement for it, he was very obsessed with legs, he had to change his monogram because his father was pissed. Eventually died of syphillis.

Theme is that modern technology can destroy if it’s put in the wrong hands, Hitler hated Picasso. Timeless, as war never goes away.

Franz Marc, Marc was gentle, opposite from Kandinsky. He adored animals, looked at them as innocent spirit. Color theory, red-war, green-jealousy, yellow-feminine, blue-masculine. A broken world, shows what technology has done, innocent animals are in the thick of it, Innocence vs. aggression, 2 years into the war marc dies.

Kazimir Malevich, Russian dictator ruled everything, WWI fully in swing, sees everything as losing it’s colors, 0 degree of painting, it’s NOT ABOUT THE BLACK SQUARE, takes cubism to the furthest extent-breaking it down to nothing, White border creates the idea that this is fine art, the square represents everything, represents freedom. Not about what it is, but what it represents.

The three studies for figures at the base of a crucifixion

Francis Bacon, he was a very tortured soul, parents were awful, Nanny took care of him, he was kicked out at 16 for cross dressing, worshipped Picasso, became designer for Eileen Gray, destroyed the work he didn’t like. Painting is inspired by Guernica, there was a blitz attack in London, Bacon was in building and was traumatized. Red background like the sky, figure representing Hitler getting out of car (calling him a dick), hid image in rework, Atrophic- 3 separate paintings next to each other, head down figure represents Mary grieving loss of her son, others look mad, representing St. John (protecting), screaming creature represents Mary Magdelin. Bacon hated religion- thought God abandoned his people in the war.
