What are the main duty of a Responsible Person
The Responsible Person is the main duty holder for fire safety and has, as a result, overall responsibility for:
•Undertaking the fire risk assessment
•Putting precautions in place to safeguard employees and non-employees
•Ensuring that testing and maintenance are carried out for such aspects as
•Fire detection
•Fire fighting equipment
•Emergency exit routes and fire exits
•Fire evacuation drills and assembly points
What is a Responsible Person
A Responsible Person is a specified individual who is responsible or fire safety.
An employer has total responsibility they would be responsible for their employees and any relevant person lawfully on or round the premises.
Where there is no employer an occupier or owner is the responsible person.
There can be more than one responsible person to varying degrees depending on the control they have over the premises
Name 4 types of evacuation strategy
- Total evacuation - all occupants move to a place of safety
- Total simultaneous evacuation - two stage evacuation
- Total phased evacuation - fire floor and above etc
- Progressive evacuation - Horizontal or zoned
What is required from DSEAR?
Employers have to eliminate or controller the risks from dangerous substances.
Specific duties falling on employers in the workplace where explosive atmospheres may occur
Name the classes (classification) of fire and materials
Class A - Solid materials, wood, paper, textiles, hardboard, soft furnishings
Class B - Flammable liquids, petrol, paraffin, paint, thinners, white spirit
Class C - Flammable gases, LPG, butane, propane, Hot Works
Class D - Metals, sodium, lithium, manganese, aluminium
Class F - Commercial Oils and Fats
No class for Electrical fires, as electricity doesn’t have any fuels which can be extinguished
Name the two types of Smoke Detectors
Ionisation - Radioactive within the detector picks up small particles (good for chip pan fires)
Optical - Larger particles break the beam to activate it (ultraviolet light)
Name 2 types of Heat detectors
Fixed Temperature - over 68c will activate detector
Rapid ‘Rate of Rise’ - detects sudden rise in temperature
What type of physical harm could effect people in the event of fire
Burns, Scalds - heat Chemical burns, Sunburn, Contact burn, Electrical burn Lung issues from inhalation from smoke or chemicals, Physical injuries - crushed injuries due to fall etc
Term Fire Risk
Fire Risk is a combination of a chance or probability of a fire occurring. The severity of the outcome
Article 35 - Appeals Notice
A person who has been served an Alteration, Enforcement, Prohibition Notice or notice given by the Fire & Rescue Authority in respect of the position and marking of the ‘Fire Fighters’ switched for luminous Tube Signs may appeal within 21 days to the magistrates court

Define Means of Escape
A safe route provided fir persons to escape from fire any point of the building to a place of safety without outside assistance
These vary from building to building due to the nature and size of the building and nature and disposition of the occupants
What is Total Phased Evacuation
In a Phased evacuation the fire floor and the floor above would be evacuated first, then the remaining floors two at a time at phased intervals.
Those with physical impairments would be moved to a place of safety as part of the personal emergency escape plan.(PEEP)
