Exam 2 Terms Flashcards
Background sound during audiometric testing.
Ambient noise
All devices that deliver sound during hearing testing.
Transducers
Refers to the conversion of electrical signals to sound by the earphone or some other device.
Transducer
Earphones that deliver the stimulus into the ear canal by means of a soft compressible foam plug inserted well within the external ear canal.
Insert earphones
Earphones that fit inside soft rubber donut-shaped cushions which rest on the pinna of the ear.
Supra-aural earphones
To reduce
Attenuate
A reduction of sound; specifcally, the reduction of ambient (background) noise that reaches the inner ear.
Attenuation of sound
Piece of equipment designed specifcally for hearing assessment, with which the audiologist can select certain types of sounds and can present the sounds to the patient at precise intensity levels.
Audiometer
Verification that the equipment is performing properly and that the stimuli produced by the taudiometer and the sound levels produced by the transducers are accurate.
Calibration
Defined as the average hearing level for a large number of normal-hearing persons. NOT an absence of sound; just where we hear the softest.
Audiometric zero (0 dB HL)
Daily verification of the output of audiometers and earphones conducted by a person who is known to have normal hearing.
Listening check or biological or psychoacoustic calibration
Used to describe traditional hearing assessment, because the person being tested responds to sound with some type of behavior that can be observed by the tester.
Behavioral audiometry
The response is dependent on the perception and experiences of the particular person being tested and the tester’s detection of the patient’s response is dependent on perception and experience.
Subjective
