What is Gender Binary? 2 Parts
- Typically understand gender as a binary: two options
- There have always been people who did not fit the gender binary
Define: Sex
Biological and physical characteristics that define men and women (anatomy, chromosomes, hormones)
Define: Intersex(different ways this presents) 3 Parts
Person born with reproductive or sexual anatomy that does not fit the typical definition of female or male
1) Born appearing female on outside, but male anatomy on inside
2) Ambiguous genitalia
3) Mosaic genetics
Define: Gender
Roles, behaviors, and activities that a given society/culture considers appropriate for men and women
Define: Gender Identity
Internal, deeply held sense of one’s gender
Define: Gender Expression
External manifestations of gender; outward presentation of gender (name, clothing, hairstyle, etc.)
Define: Sexual Orientation
Who you are attracted to, who you love
Define: Cisgender
A person who possesses the gender identity associated with biological sex at birth
Define: Transgender or Trans: 3 Parts
A person who does not identify with the biological sex assigned at birth, either wholly or partially
1) Not dependent upon medical procedures
2) Has nothing to do with sexual orientation
3) Term transsexual is out-of-favor
Define: Non-binary
People whose gender identity and expressions reject the binary
Define: Genderqueer
People who “queer” gender, play with gender, challenge traditional gender norms
Define: Gender nonconforming
Gender expression that does not conform to traditional gender norms; dress or behave in ways that defy gender stereotypes
Define: Third-gender
Rejects the binary; neither male/female; both male/female
Define: Agender
Lacks a gender, genderless
Define: Gender fluid
A mixture of male/female; move back and forth

Encompasses the entirety of the gender spectrum
