Exam 2 - lines and monitors Flashcards
Endotracheal tube (ET tube)
used to protect airway or as means to provide mechanical ventilation
- potential for laryngeal injury to tracheal injury
Tracheostomy tube (trach tube)
- placed surgically
- used to protect airway or as means to provide mech ventilation
- avoids laryngeal complications/injuries (avoids structures unlike ET tube)
Speaking valves
-one way valve. only lets air in.
***if used while internal cuff is inflated pt cannot exhale and will not be able to breathe.
-
Nasal cannula
- used to supple supplemental oxygen
- not recommended for > 6 liter/min flow
Hi-flow nasal cannula
- special tubing etc allows for up to 60 liters/min
- 100 % FiO2
Simple oxygen mask
- provides supplemental o2
- 35-55% FiO2
- 5-10 L/min depending on flow rate
Venturi mask
- supplemental o2
- 24-50% FiO2
- 4-10 L/min flow
partial or non-rebreather
- supplemental o2
- partial rebreather = 40-60% FiO2
- non-rebreather = 60-80% FiO2
Trach collar
-to provide higher FiO2 to the track site
Peripheral IV
- No ROM restriction
- placed in peripheral vein
- provides fluid or meds
Peripherally inserted central catheter line (PICC line)
- No ROM restrictions
- stitched in
- 1,2, or 3 ports
- used in pt with difficult vein access
Central line
- venous line
- gives central venous pressure (CVP)
- either in the jugular, subclavian, or femoral
- can do ROM stuff but double check with RN/MD
Arterial line
- stitched into artery
- for blood draws
- ** provides continuous monitoring of BP
- Limit ROM at involved joint.
- ** if line is pulled, apply pressure to site.
Dialysis Catheter
- large lumen central line used for hemodialysis
- red and blue capped ports
- Restrict ROM of ipsilateral joint where it is attached.
Pulmonary artery catheter (swan Ganz)
- goes to pulmonary artery
- measures lots of heart stuff
- Restrict ROM
Chest tube
- placed when there is excess fluid or air in pleural space or mediastinum
- for draining
Jackson-Pratt (JP) drains
- grenade-like
- used after surgery
- drains fluid from surgical site
- keep below level of insertion
Foley catheter
- collects urine
- keep below.
condom catheter
- very similar to foley
Rectal tube
- temporary collects feces
- keep below level of insertion
colostomy bag
- collects poo
- watch for gait belt placement
nasogastric tube
- removes gastric contents
- can also be feeding tube
- keep bed head up 30 degrees
Catheterization sheaths
- placed for access during cardiac catheterization or PTCA/stent placement
- no ROM to ipsilateral hip.
intra-aortic balloon pump
- used to assist pt heart with EF and coronary artery filling
- NO ROM at affected joint
Intracranial pressure monitor (ICP)
- monitors intracranial pressure
- do not lay pt flat
Pulse oximeter
- gives HR and SpO2
Non-invasive blood pressure (NIBP)
- don’t use over other lines.
telemetry leads
- gives cardiac rhythm and rate
Ventilators
know when they are on.
