Q

Management of IUFD

A

Due to the risk of maternal COAGULOPATHY because of the release of tissue thromboplastin from nonviable fetal tissues, expeditious delivery is indicated via any of the following methods:
-Hysterotomy or Caesarean section
-Induction of labor with misoprostol and/or oxytocin
-Dilation and evacuation under anesthesia (cannot see fetus or do autopsy)

Q

Factors to consider in management of IUFD

A

-Does the patient wish to see the fetus?
-Will the patient request an autopsy?
-If the answer to either question is yes, then dilation and evacuation is not feasible

Q

Care of a subsequent pregnancy in a patient with history of IUFD

A

-Patients with a history of IUFD have an increased risk 2.5 times higher of having another IUFD compared to women who have not had this outcome
