Intake of food involving mouth, pharynx, esophagus
Digestion and what is involved
Stomach and small intestine. Chemical and physical breakdown of food into absorbable substances
Absorption and what is involved
Stomach and small intestine. Uptake of nutrients from the gut lumen into the bloodstream
Elimination and what is involved
Large intestine. Defecation of feces (75% water), from the large intestine through the anus.
Age related changes of the GI system
Decreased motility, delayed emptying of esophagus, 30-40% chronic constipation, liver size decreases after 50, gallbladder disease increase.
Purpose of a colonoscopy
Visualize the entire colon, used to diagnose or detect inflammatory bowel disease, polyps, tumors and diverticulosis.
Purpose of an esophagogastroduodenoscopy
Visualizes the mucosal lining of the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. Detects inflammation, ulcerations, tumors, varices and Mallory-Weiss tears
