DM in pregnancy
caused from a lack of insulin or lack of insulin effect

Insulin production increased-> increased peripheral use of insulin-> results in decreased blood glucose (hypoglycemia)
effect of pregnancy on Insulin requirements in 1st trimester
Insulin requirements increase as much as 4 times the usual amount; with expulsion of placenta-> abrupt drop of hormones and return to prepregnant state
Insulin requirements of 2nd and 3rd trimesters

Risk Factor for Hypoglycemia
-too little food
-too large insulin dose
-stress
-illness/vomiting or diarrhea
-exercise
Symptoms of Hypoglycemia
-Nervousness
-HA
-Shaking/irritable
-Hunger
-blurred vision
-diaphoresis
