Removal of foreign material and dead or damaged tissue from a wound
Decubitis Ulcer
Open sore caused by pressure over bony prominence blocking blood flow; can appear in bed ridden patients who lie in one position for too long; can be difficult to heal
Dermabrasion
Scrapping skin with rotating wire brushes or sandpaper; used to remove acne scars
Dermatome
Instrument use to cut skin to be use for a graft
Herpes simplex
Infection by herpes simplex virus HSV causing painful blisters around lips and nose
Herpes Zoster (Shingles)
Viral infection of nerve root; causes appearance of severe blisters around nerve path
Impetigo
Inflammatory skin disease with pustules that rupture and become crusted
Laceration
Jagged edge skin wound caused by tearing skin; does not mean a skin cut
Laser Surgery
Removal of legions and birthmarks using a laser beam
Lesion
General term that indicates the presence of some type of tissue abnormality, wound, or injury
Macule
Flat, discolored, spot of skin surface example: freckle or birthmark
Malignant melanoma
Aggressive form of skin cancer that originates in an melanocyte. Prone to metastasis or spread
Necrosis
Area of tissue death
Nevus
Pigmenteed congenital skin blemish, birthmark, or mole
Nodule
Solid, raised clump of cell
Onychia
Inflamed nail bed
Papule
Flat, pinpoint, purplish spots from bleeding under the skin

Fungal skin disease resulting in itching; scaling lesion

Open sore or lesion in the skin or mucous membrane
Urticaria
Skin eruption of pale reddish wheals with severe itching; usually associated with allergy, stress or drug reaction. Also called hives
Varicella
Highly contagious viral infection with skin rash; commonly called chicken pox
Vesicle
Small fluid filled raised spot on the skin
Wheal
Small round raised area on skin that may be accompanied by itching; usually in allergy reaction
