Exam 2 - Classes 3, 4, 5 Flashcards
miscarriage
an in-utero death prior to 20 weeks of gestation; aka spontaneous abortion
stillbirth
a fetal death occurring at 20 weeks or later; aka “intrauterine fetal demise”
cerclage
use of nonabsorbable suture to constrict the internal os of a cervix that is dilating prematurely because of cervical weakness
the suture can be placed vaginally or abdominally
Cerclage can be placed either prophylactically or as a rescue procedure
fetal fibronectin (fFN)
glycoprotein “glue” found in plasma and produced during fetal life; normally appears in cervical & vaginal secretions early in pregnancy and again late in pregnancy
assessing for the presence or absence of fFN in vaginal secretions is used as a diagnostic test for preterm labor
intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR)
fetal undergrowth of any cause, such as deficient nutrient supply or intrauterine infection, or associated with congenital malformation; birth weight less than population 10th percentile corrected for gestational age
