Constipation
Symptom, not disease
Infrequent stool/hard, dry, small stool that is difficult to eliminate
Impaction
Results from unrelieved constipation
Collection of hardened feces wedged in the rectum that PT can’t expel
Diarrhea
Increase in number of stool and passage of liquid, unformed feces
Fecal Incontinence
Inability to control passage of feces and gas to anus
Flatulence
Accumulation of gas in the intestines causing walls to stretch
Hemorrhoids
Dilated, engorged veins in rectal lining
Stoma
Temporary/permanent artificial opening in the abdominal wall
Ileostomy and Colostomy
Surgical opening in ileum or colon
Feces that result from ileostomy
Liquid feces
Feces that result from colostomy
Solid feces
Ileoanal Pouch Anastomosis
Creates a false colon; no external component
Used for ulcerative colitis
Bristol Stool Scale
Rates consistency, size, and shape of stool
Type 1 - most dry, smallest, hardest to pass
Type 2 - Entirely liquid, easiest to pass
Cathartic Medications
Stronger and more rapid effect on intestines than laxatives
Cause complete evacuation
Laxative Medications
Ease the passage of fully formed feces from intestine
Suppository Speed of Efficacy
Act quicker than oral medications
