Exam 2 Flashcards
Latitude
East to west lines that indicate north to south position on the globe.
Longitude
North to south lines that indicate east to west position on the globe.
Biological Species Concept
A population or group of populations that are intermating or potentially intermating and are reproductively isolated from other groups.
Phylogenetic Species Concept
A species is the smallest monophyletic group of common ancestry.
Cohesion Species Concept
A species is the most inclusive population of individuals having the potential for phenotypic cohesion through intrinsic cohesive mechanisms.
Genealogical Species Concept
Species are exclusive groups of organisms where an exclusive group is one whose members are all more closely related to one another than to any organism outside of the group.
Ecological Species Concept
A species is a lineage that occupies an adaptive zone minimally different than that of any other lineage in its range and which evolves separately from all other lineages outside its range.
Recognition Species Concept
A species is the most inclusive population of organisms that share a common fertilization system.
Evolutionary Species Concept
A species is a lineage evolving separately from others and with its own unitary evolutionary roles and tendencies.
Lineage
The result of divisions of taxa.
Species
The end of a lineage, the terminus of each branch.
Evolution
Generation to generation change in the frequency of alleles in a population and the division of populations into lineages.
Population
A group of potentially interbreeding organisms living in the same place at the same time.
Cladistics vs Phenetics
Cladistics and Phenetics are both methods by which organisms can be classified and grouped. However, Cladistics is the classification of organisms based upon their evolutionary history whereas Phenetics is the classification of organisms based upon morphological characteristics that are observable.
5 Types of Prezygotic Reproductive Isolation
- Temporal Isolation
- Habitat Isolation
- Behavioral Isolation
- Gametic Isolation
- Mechanical Isolation
