Exam 2 Flashcards
Biomes
Large, distinct ecological systems characterized by climate, soil, plants, and animals.
Riparian
Vegetation, habitats, or ecosystems that are associated with bodies of water
Exponential Growth
Constant rate of growth applied to a continuously growing base.
Land Ethic
Having “respect for the land and all living things.” Viewpoint of Aldo Leopold.
Bioaccumulation
Build-up of achemical substance in or apart of an organism.
Biomagnification
Build-up of a chemical substance in a food chain.
Management
Manipulation of populations or habitats to achieve desired goals by people.
Passive Management
no direct action towards the manipulation of wildlife.
Ex. Increasing amount food source to increase population.
Wildlife Management
Scientifically based art of manipulating habitats to produce desired effect; protect, conserve, limit or enhance wildlife populations.
Ecosystem Management
Guardianship thats emphasizes ecological systems as functional units and long term sustainability of those systems.
Featured Species
Species selected for managment emphasis due to their high value to humans.
Ecosystem Engineer
Species that physically alter their habitat in such a way that other species and systems are altered.
Small Game & Upland Birds
Small birds and mammals regulary hunted for sport. (not furbearers, big game, or waterfowl)
Indicator Species
Species that indicates certain enviornmental conditions, seral stages, or treatments. (Serve as warnings)
Biota
All plants and animals within a region.
Bycatch
Captured marine organisms not intended to be target species. (shellfish, ocean birds, fish)
Fry
Larval fish
Endangered Species Act (1973)
Provides the framework to conserve and protect endangered and threatend species along with their habitats. (domestic and international species)
Invasive Species
An organism that is not native to an ecosystem and negativley interacts with other native species.
Life History
The age specific schedule of reproduction amd mortality of a population.
Keystone Species
A species in which other species largely depend on, such that if it were removed, the exosystem would change drastically.
Biosphere
Zone of air, land, and water where organisms exist.
Holocene Era
(11.5-12k yrs ago - present) Age of man and the impacts we have on the earth (agriculture, urbanization, industrialization)
Climate Property
Property that affects distribution and type of different biomes.
