Exam 2 Flashcards
know all
What is a lacteal?
Lymphatic capillaries in GI tract
State the function of the lacteal.
Absorb lipid soluble substances from GI tract
Explain the mechanisms that move lymph through the lymphatic capillaries.
Hydrostatic pressure of interstitial fluid pushes it into capillary
Thoracic Duct
Runs from diaphragm to junction of left subclavian and left jugular veins.
Right Lymphatic Duct
Drains the right upper arm and the right side of the head and thorax
Lymphedema
Accumulation of interstitial fluid due to interference with lymphatic drainage
Elephantiasis
Caused by infection with parastitic worm
Primary Lymphatic Structure
Involved in formation and maturation of lymphocytes
*Located in red bone marrow and thymus
Secondary Lymphatic Structure
Do not form lymphocytes, but houses them and other immune cells
*Located in lymph nodes, spleen, tonsils, and lymphatic nodules. Including MALT (Mucosa-Associated Lymphatic Tissue
B-cell maturation location
Bone Marrow
T-call maturation location
Thymus
Where are lymph node aggregations found at within the body?
Inguinal, axillary, and cervical regions
What is the function of lymph nodes?
Filtration- Macrophages destroys microogranisms and debris.
Immune system activation- monitors for antigens and mount and attacks against them.
Flow through the lymph node
Lymph enters several afferent vessels, lymph exits node through efferent vessels.
Spleen location
left superior side of the abdomen
