What is HOPS?
History - what, when, when, why, where, and how
Observation - deformity, swelling, or limp
Palpation - pain, defects, or deformity
Stress tests - strength, flexibility, and sensation tests
What is athletic training?
Prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses related to psychical activity under direction of physician
What does ice do and how do you use it?
Ice decreases swelling, pain, spasms, cell metabolism, never conduction, and cell death Ice massage (7-10 minutes), ice bath (15-30 minutes), gel packs (can cause frostbite)
What does heat do and how do you use it?
Heat increases circulation, metabolism, capillary permeability, edema, spasms, pain, viscosity, and stiffness
Superficial - moist heat packs, whirlpool, heat lamp, and parafin bath
Deep - ultrasound and diathermy
What does a PPE do and when should you get one?
Ensures you are physically able to participate, detects risk factors, and meets legal/organization requirements
4-6 weeks prior to participation
What are the leading causes of Sudden Cardiac Death?
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, anomalous origin of coronary arteries, arrythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy, ion channelopaties, commotio cordis, myocarditis, and Marian syndrome
Why don’t we use ECG’s to prevent SCD’s in PPE’s?
It cost too much, not practical, and ethical issues
What is tort?
Civil or social wrong
What is needed to cause negligence?
Duty, breach of duty (omission - didn’t do it, commission - did do it), damages, and causal link
Must prove all four things, typically needs anger
How do you prevent negligence?
Do what same level professional would do and document everything
Understand the assumption of risk, Samaritan rule, and sovereign immunity
