Plate Mark
Method of painting primarily in oils, in which the finished painting is achieved in one operation by working directly on the ground without any underpainting.
Direct Painting/Alla Prima
Degree of roughness present in drawing papers.
Tooth
A printing technique in which the parts of the printing surface that carry ink are left raised, while the remaining areas are cut away. Woodcuts and linoleum are included in this technique.
Relief Printing
Sculptural form produced by adding, combining, or building up material form a core or armature. Modeling in clay and welding steel are additive processes.
Additive Sculpture
Sculpture that projects strongly from its background.
High Relief
This is the total number of prints made and approved by the artist.
Edition
Working pliable material such as clay or wax into a 3D form. In drawing or painting the effects of light falling on a 3D object so that the illusion of its mass is created and defined by the value gradations.
Modeling
A collection of photographs on a single subject arranged to tell a story or convey a mood in a way not possible with a single photo.
Photo Essay
A hard type of drawing chalk made of graphite and clay. It is named after the French scientist who developed it. It comes in black and a range of earth tones.
Conte Crayon
