exam 2 Flashcards
Hydrotherapy
pool therapy,
whirlpool, and pulsatile
lavage (or spraying
wound with water).
Water Has 4 Properties…
- Heating or cooling
- Buoyancy
- Resistance
- Hydrostatic pressure
Heating or Cooling- Hydrotherapy
conduction or convection
Buoyancy- hydrotherapy
Upward thrust on the
body, opposite the force
of gravity
resistance- hydrotherapy
Provided by the viscosity of
water. Increases with speed of
motion, or with surface area
exposed to water.
hydrostatic pressure-hydrotherapy
Pressure exerted by the water on all sides of a
body part. This increases with depth of water. At
4 feet under water, the pressure exerted will be
about 89 mm Hg, which is slightly more than
normal diastolic BP. This pressure can promote
circulation, alleviating edema.
effects of hydrotherapy
- Integumentary
- Musculoskeletal
- Cardiovascular
- Respiratory
- Renal
- Nervous – (psychological effect)
Hydrostatic pressure
increases blood flow to
muscles by…
100-200%
Hydrostatic pressure pushes
blood from periphery to
thorax and heart. Increased
central blood volume,
increased cardiac volume.
Response of heart is…
increased cardiac
contraction and stroke
volume
RPE= Rate of Perceived Exertion
- Patient rates how hard an activity is
- Scale usually goes from 6-20 or the modified
scale is from 1-10
Due to increased venous
return to heart and chest
cavity, resistance to lung
expansion is increased.
Vital capacity…
decreases by about
10%, increases work of
breathing by 60%.
renal hydrotherapy
Due to increased central
blood volume, urine
production increases.
