Fat/Obese Distension
Rolls of adipose tisue along both sides, skin is not taut
Fluid distension
flanks protrude, when client turns to one side the protrusion moves to the dependent side
Flatus Distension
protrusion mainly midline and there is no change in the flanks
Hernias
protrusions through the abdominal muscle wall are visible, especially when client flexes abdominal muscles
Blumberg’s Sign
Indication of irritation or inflammation in the abdominal cavity (Cholecystitis)
Pain after release of pressure on abdomen
Tympanic sounds + Distension?
often suggests excessive gas accummulation in the GI tract
Considerations for enlarged spleen?
- Roll patient on right side
- STOP PALPATION
- Monitor for fever, Tachycardia, or hypotension
- AVOID CONTACT SPORTS
Borborgymi
abnormally loud growling sounds indicating increased GI motility
Pyrosis
heartburn
Oliguria
decreased output of urine
Anuria
complete absence of urine production
Polyuria
excessive urine output
Dysuria
painful or burning urination
Diuresis
increased production of urine by the kidneys

Chovstek’s sign
tapping on a person’s cheeck right in front of the ear elicits a twitch of the facial muscles due to hypocalcemia (low Ca in the blood)

Cataract findings?
blurry/cloudy vision, difficulty seeing at night, light sensitivity
Glaucoma findings?
blurred vision, seeing halos around lights, n/v
retinal detachment findings?
seeing floaters, flashes of light, shadow or curtain in field of vision
AMD findings?
blurred vision, difficulty distinguishing colors, difficulty reading or recognizing faces
PERRLA?
- Pupils clear
- Equal (3-7mm)
- Round
- Reactive to light (direct and consensual)
- Accommodation
Anisocoria
unequal pupil size
Miosis
constricted and fixed pupils
