Simply list at least two activities that people have reported flow when participating in. Finally, discuss the dark side of flow.
Flow is a state of being characterized by merging of action and awareness, complete concentration on a task, lack of worry about losing control, loss of self-consciousness, losing track of time, doing something for its own sake, being in a challenging environment for your skill level, and clear goals with immediate feedback. People have gone into a flow state when doing schoolwork or working out. Compare and contrast Ellen Langer mindfulness and Buddhist-Inspired mindfulness. In addition, for each type of mindfulness, give a detailed description and at least two benefits, according to research cited in the textbook.
Langer’s mindfulness approach seeks to pay attention to the world around us, experiencing new stimuli and emotions expanding our view. Buddhism seeks to turn that attention towards the individual asking them to detach themselves from external stimuli.Langer’s approach had the benefits of reducing risk of physical disease and increasing cognitive flexibility. The buddhist approach had benefits of increased emotional regulation and decreased anxiety
Be able to define capitalization in your own words and provide specific examples of the possible ways of responding to capitalization, including a description of each of the ways
Capitalization is the sharing of positive experiences with others. Passive destruction is a response which involves ignoring the capitalization. Active destruction is a response which attacks the individual for sharing the experience. Passive constructive is a response that acknowledges the capitalization but doesn’t expand upon it, and active constructive involves building upon and encouraging the capitalization
Thoroughly explain the technique of expressive writing and at least two findings from research using it.
Expressive writing is the process of taking events you think about and writing them on the page with a goal of getting them from your head to the page. Writing about personal negative experiences has been shown to benefit us in both mental and physical well-being compared to writing about superficial trauma. Analyzing good events has a negative effect on our memory of them but reviewing negative effects has helped reduce the negative impacts of them.
Thoroughly Explain the importance of attributions in marital satisfaction. Provide a specific, concrete example to illustrate an unhappy couple and a happy couple in terms of how they make attributions, being sure that your examples cover both types of attributions mentioned in class.
Attributions are ways in which members of a relationship apply perceived reasoning to another’s action. Attributing personal reasons to positive behavior and attributing situational reasons to negative behavior is healthiest for a relationship.
Dan Buettner studied longevity by identifying places on the earth where people live the longest. Based on this research on “Blue Zones, they outlined nine characteristics that people in all these places shared.” Discuss at least three of them, providing detailed examples.
Three characteristics of bluezone areas include physical activity such as easy access to convenient ways to exercise like being able to walk to a park, not overeating at a buffet instead of eating until you’re full stop at around 80% of your perceived capacity, and social connections when you feel down you will have support to help provide a buffer effect.
