Exam 2 Flashcards
Beatitudes
Stated in Matthew 5:1-11, Jesus begins his sermon on the mount with the beatitudes. The beatitudes begin with “blessed are those”, and they are a series of statements.
Prophet
Messengers from God that speak His Word and tell the people of Israel how to live as God’s people. They remind the people of God’s law.
Disciple
Students and followers of a Rabbi. They learn from their Rabbi by following him around all day. In person, real life experience
Apostles
“Sent out” to share the good news. The 12 disciples of Jesus were also known as apostles
Pharisees
They are Jew religious leaders that taught people how to live under God’s law. Considered Jewish authorities & elite. They are two faced, hypocrites, and make a spectacle to get public attention. They are also known as synagogue leaders. Oppose Jesus and His ministry; plot to kill Jesus
Sadducees
Jewish Religious leaders, teachers of God’s law and against Jesus (opposition). Interpret God’s law
Scribes
When Jesus heals a paralyzed man (mt 9:3-8), the Scribes call Jesus “blasphemous” for claiming that He can forgive the man’s sins. The scribes are familiar with God’s law, so hearing Jesus say this did not make sense.
Synagogues
HOUSE OF STUDY: Where Rabbis are found teaching God’s law (Torah)
Sabbath
7th day belongs to God (Saturday). God established this day of rest where everyone does NOT work. To keep it Holy (pure & purposeful to God). Sanctification (holiness), and is a sign to generations.
-if you break Sabbath Law, you are no longer Holy; punishment is death (or cut off from society).
Parables
Jesus use parables to teach and disclose something about Himself (Jesus), and the Kingdom of Heaven. The parables are to check if you are paying attention, not just hearing or seeing, but rather listening/understanding/interpreting and perceiving.
(Matthew 13:13-15)
Canaanite
Considered gentiles.
A Canaanite woman approached Jesus, seeking help, and Jesus demonstrated that in order to be God’s people, nationality doesn’t matter; it is a matter of faith and following God’s law
Blasphemy
Teaching wrongly about God/ going against what God’s law states.
Tax collectors
Perceived as “not righteous” , as sinners. Matthew is a Tex collector who is chosen my Jesus.
Son of Man
“Son of”=who you belong to; the people he represents
Son of man means that Jesus represents all of humanity. He is human/from this earth.
Elijah
Elijah had to be sent first before the retsoration of Irael. Just as John the Baptist is sent before Jesus. John the Baptist is the Elijah who is to to come; more than a prophet. (Malacchi 4)
Sower
One of the parables of Jesus that reveals something about the kingdom of heaven. The seeds=the word of the kingdom. Lands on path, rocky ground, thorns, and good soil.
Kingdom of Heaven
Good news, restoration of the Spirit, changes status of the people. It is a reward. The k of h challenges the steortypes and erroneous societal ideologies.

Rules over Judea under the Roman Empire. He is the one who is behind John the Baptist’s death as his head is requested by Herodias’s daughter (Herod antipas wants to be with her)
Gentile
Term that refers to all the people from other nations that are NOT Jew.
What injustices does Jesus expose about the world in his Sermon on the Mount? Who are the blessed and what does this tell us about their status in this world versus the Kingdom of Heaven?
Jesus exposes that the main injustice in this world is the way the powerless, the victims, and those excluded from society are treated. Jesus exposes that those mistreated, vulnerable, and forgotten in this world are blessed in His Kingdom. Jesus blesses the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, those who desire righteousness, the merciful, pure in heart, the persecuted cause of their faith. Jesus says that there is the kingdom of heaven, they are part of community, they have value, and they are not forgotten.
What do we need to know about healing in the ancient world to make sense of how Jesus heals people in Matt 8-9? How does the healing that Jesus provides compare?
In the ancient world, specifically in Jewish culture and religion, the religious leaders
What are the instructions that Jesus provides his disciples in Matt 10? How does this prepare them for the reality they will face as they continue Jesus’ ministry?
In Matthew 10, Jesus sends out his disciples to cure disease & sickness and cast out evil spirits. the purpose of this is to proclaim the good news of the gospel to the Jews and tell them the kingdom of heaven has come near. Jesus I trust etc them to not take anything with them or accept anything from anyone because everything they did would be for free. Go first to our people! Not the gentiles. Don’t bring money!! As they advance in their ministry they will face hatred, rejection, persecution, and in the end those proclaiming Jesus’ ministry will cost their lives.
How does Jesus answer John the Baptist’s question in Matt 11? How does his use of Isaiah 35:3-6 reveal his identity?
Jesus tells John the Baptist that the blind can see, the lame can walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, and the good news are proclaimed to the poor. Jesus responds like this in connection to Isaiah 35:3-6, where God promises to restore and save Israel. So instead of Jesus answering directly to whether he is the promised one or not, he responds with a text the Jews are familiar with. Jesus reveals his identity and says “I am God”.
According to the Old Testament, what is the penalty for violating Sabbath Law (provide a scripture verse in. Your answer)? How does this influence Jesus’ interaction with the Pharisees in Matt 12? What does this mean “I require mercy, not sacrifice”?
The penalty for violating Sabbath law is death or being cut off from society/community. Because breaking these laws was unholy, the Pharisees focused on excluding those who broke the law & would not be allowed back into society.
