20
Q

What injustices does Jesus expose about the world in his Sermon on the Mount? Who are the blessed and what does this tell us about their status in this world versus the Kingdom of Heaven?

A

Jesus exposes that the main injustice in this world is the way the powerless, the victims, and those excluded from society are treated. Jesus exposes that those mistreated, vulnerable, and forgotten in this world are blessed in His Kingdom. Jesus blesses the poor in spirit, those who mourn, the meek, those who desire righteousness, the merciful, pure in heart, the persecuted cause of their faith. Jesus says that there is the kingdom of heaven, they are part of community, they have value, and they are not forgotten.

21
Q

What do we need to know about healing in the ancient world to make sense of how Jesus heals people in Matt 8-9? How does the healing that Jesus provides compare?

A

In the ancient world, specifically in Jewish culture and religion, the religious leaders

22
Q

What are the instructions that Jesus provides his disciples in Matt 10? How does this prepare them for the reality they will face as they continue Jesus’ ministry?

A

In Matthew 10, Jesus sends out his disciples to cure disease & sickness and cast out evil spirits. the purpose of this is to proclaim the good news of the gospel to the Jews and tell them the kingdom of heaven has come near. Jesus I trust etc them to not take anything with them or accept anything from anyone because everything they did would be for free. Go first to our people! Not the gentiles. Don’t bring money!! As they advance in their ministry they will face hatred, rejection, persecution, and in the end those proclaiming Jesus’ ministry will cost their lives.

23
Q

How does Jesus answer John the Baptist’s question in Matt 11? How does his use of Isaiah 35:3-6 reveal his identity?

A

Jesus tells John the Baptist that the blind can see, the lame can walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, and the good news are proclaimed to the poor. Jesus responds like this in connection to Isaiah 35:3-6, where God promises to restore and save Israel. So instead of Jesus answering directly to whether he is the promised one or not, he responds with a text the Jews are familiar with. Jesus reveals his identity and says “I am God”.

24
Q

According to the Old Testament, what is the penalty for violating Sabbath Law (provide a scripture verse in. Your answer)? How does this influence Jesus’ interaction with the Pharisees in Matt 12? What does this mean “I require mercy, not sacrifice”?

A

The penalty for violating Sabbath law is death or being cut off from society/community. Because breaking these laws was unholy, the Pharisees focused on excluding those who broke the law & would not be allowed back into society.

25
Q

What does Jesus’ interaction with the Canaanite woman in Matt 15 tell us about Jesus’ mission? In light of this, what does it mean to eat the crumbs from the master’s table?

A

Jesus’s mission is specifically focused on his priority, which is his lost sheep=the Jews (God’s chosen people). With that in mind, the woman insists Jesus would help her, and so when he did to calls her kynarion, through loving eyes seeing her faith and having mercy on her and in the future, saving all the gentiles. This shows that to be part of the people of God, your nationality does not matter, he cares about your obedience and recognition that He is Lord. To eat the crumbs from the master’s table means that the Gentiles were receiving what was left over from what Jesus was providing. The woman saying even then she desires those crumbs, and would be satisfied with even a little bit of what Jesus gives
