What is A1: social and emotional reciprocity
social responsiveness and expressiveness
- back and fourth conversation and sharing that isn’t goal directed
social awareness
- dont understand thoughts and feelings of others and can’t read body language.
- atypical facial processing
What is A2: non verbal social communication
inconsistent use of preverbal gestures (like pointing)
- goal directed vs. shared interest pointing

Restrictive repetitive patterns of behaviour, interests, or activities

B4: reactivity to sensory imput

E.g.,
- inflexible adherence to non-functional routines and rituals.
- changes cause distress
b3: what is restricted fixated interests?
restricted range of interests (but society restricts them)
- they fixate on a topic, but we tend to restrict and order so it doesn’t “become a problem”
B4: reactivity to sensory input
e.g.,
- overreact to specific sounds or textures
- can be painful
- difficulty shifting attention to sensory input.
- under react to pain or temperature
What are the three levels of severity of dsm5 autism
l1: requiring support
L2: requiring substantial support
L3: requiring very substantial support

a change from the severity of the symptoms to the level of support that an individual needs - shows that the problem isn’t necessarily the symptoms
What is category C for autism disorder
symptoms must be present in early developmental period.
(this category was relaxed from the DSM4 so more people can get diagnosed now – had to be before 3 years old before).
What is category D for autism disorder
symptoms cause clinically significant impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of current functioning.
–> a new addition to DSM5.
- a broader diagnostic criteria, opens up more people to get diagnosed
What is category E for autism?
not due to intellectual disability or general delay
(can’t be better explained by a different disorder)
