Exam 2 Flashcards
Behavioral Activation System (BAS)
Individual difference in sensitivity to reward
BAS activation = release of dopamine
People with strong BAS are highly impulsive, novelty seekers, low delay of gratification
Associated with positive emotionality
Behavioral Inhibition System (BIS)
Individual difference in sensitivity to novelty and punishment
BIS activation = low levels of serotonin
People with strong BIS are very fearful, insecure, hyper cautious
Associated with negative emotionality
High BAS equals
Impulsivity (extroversion, neuroticism)
High BIS equals
Inhibition (introversion, neuroticism)
What is the frontal lobe associated with?
Speech/language
Self control
Interpreting the world
What happens when there is damage to the frontal lobe?
Low impulse control, sudden mood changes, often retain cognitive abilities
What happens in personality when the frontal lobe is damaged?
People become overly dependent on their environment
What is a neurotransmitter?
Chemicals released by nerves to allow impulses to jump across the synapse and continue along their way
What is Monoamine Oxidase?
Responsible for keeping a proper number of neurotransmitters at the synapse
Too little MAO equals
Too much neural activity
High sensation seeker
Too much MAO equals
Dulled movement, lethargic
High levels of dopamine
Sociability and novelty seeking
Low serotonin is associated with what?
Greater depression and anxiety
Increased serotonin equals
Reduced anxiety and depression
What is norepinephrine
Prepares the body for fight or flight
Highly anxious people have higher levels of
