Exam 2 Flashcards
The process of selecting a small number of elements from a larger defined target group of elements such that the information gathered from the small group will allow judgments to be made about the larger groups
Sampling
Used when it is impossible or unreasonable to conduct a census
Sampling
An identifiable group of elements of interest to the researcher and pertinent to the information problem
Population
The complete set of elements identified for investigation
Defined target population
The target population elements available for selection during the sampling process
Sampling units
The list of all eligible sampling units
Sampling frame
If the sample size is sufficiently large then the mean of a random sample from a population has a sampling distribution that is approximately normal, regardless of the shape of the distribution of the population. As the sample size increases, the better the approximation will be
Central limit theorem (CLT)
Any type of bias that is attributable to mistakes in either drawing a sample or determining the sample size
Sampling error
Bias that occurs in a research study regardless of whether a sample or census is used, such as bias caused by measurement error, response errors, or coding errors
Non-sampling error
Each sampling unit in the defined target population has a known probability of being selected for the sample
Probability sampling
Sampling designs in which the probability of selection of each sampling unit is not known. The selection of sampling units is based on the judgment of the researcher and may or may not be representative of the target population
Nonprobability sampling
