Exam 2 Flashcards
What are the names of the 3 clotting phases?
- Vascular
- Platelet
- Coagulation
What happens at each phase of the clotting process?
- Vascular phase = the first 30 minutes after blood vessel has become damaged, blood vessel constricts to slow/stop bleeding
- Platelet phase = platelets are activated from chemicals released at damaged site, platelets become spiked and stick together
- Coagulation phase = longest phase, where blood clotting occurs and mesh like material helps cover injury site
What are platelets produced from?
Large bone marrow cells called megakaryocytes
What is another name for white blood cells?
Leukocytes
What are the types of white blood cells?
- granulocytes = neutrophils, eosinophils, and basophils
- monocytes
- lymphocytes = T cells and B Cells
What are the functions of blood?
Transport (gasses, nutrients, hormones, waste)
regulate ph and ion composition of interstitial
restrict fluid lost at injury site
defend against toxins and pathogens
stabilize body temperature
The majority of water is ______.
water
Where is blood protein synthesized?
in the liver
What is the composition of blood plasma?
Albumins - insoluble, so water pressure stays consistent
Globulins - antibodies (target pathogens) and transport globulins
Fibrinogen - clotting
What is a majority of red blood cells made up of?
Hemoglobin
T/F : Red blood cells do NOT have a nucleus
True
What are the 4 types of blood?
Type A, Type B, Type AB and Type O
T/F : For blood typing, if the sample coagulates (clumps) that means it is the other type of blood.
False
