Exam 2 Flashcards
INDICATIONS for anatomical denture teeth
Good residual ridges
Good neuromuscular control
Previous denture success
Oppose natural dentition
INDICATIONS for NON-anatomical teeth
Poor residual ridges Poor neuromuscular control Previous denture success Potential to miss follow-up Arch discrepancies
Three kinds of balanced occlusion:
Anatomic
Non-anatomical with compensating curve
Lingualized
ADVANTAGES of ANATOMIC teeth
Esthetic is more life like
Shearing ability better
Cusp-cusp, tooth-tooth balanced occlusion possible
Positive intercuspation position possible
DISADVANTAGES of ANATOMIC teeth
Balanced occlusion lost
Requires follow-up appointments and relines
Arch relation discrepancies less adaptable
Increase in horizontal forces (inc. opportunity to destabilize denture)
Difficult to set
ADVANTAGES of NON-anatomic teeth
Centric Relation is an area, not a single point
Reduction in horizontal, destabilizing forces on RR
Easier to set
Adaptable to denture base shifting
Movement freedom
Solid occlusion developed
DISADVANTAGES of NON-anatomical teeth
Shearing ability is poor
Esthetics are not as good
Lack a positive intercuspal position
Areas of relief in mouth:
Flabby tissues Incisive papillae Tori Thin ridges Exostoses Mental foramen Palatal suture
Purpose of record bases + wax rims:
Establish: Neutral zone Occlusal plane Vertical dimension of occlusion Preliminary centric relation record
Anterior occlusal plane is…
Parallel to interpupillary line
Or
Perpendicular to midline
Posterior occlusal plane is…
Parallel to Campers line
AKA: ala-tragus line, 10 degrees inferior to Frankfort horizontal
Choosing Anterior Teeth
(URRN) Understand their function realize esthetics Realize selection is huge Narrow down choices (manufacturer, line, mould, shade)
Choosing Posterior teeth:
(URIN) Understand their function Realize selection is huge Identify occlusal scheme Narrow down choices
Advantages of plastic teeth:
Readily available
Impact resistant
Chemical retention
Easily adjusted
Disadvantages of porcelain teeth:
Difficult to adjust
Abrasive
Require mechanical retention
Not impact resistant
Anatomical landmarks for neutral zone:
Bucco-lingual
- Over to ridge
- Lingual control line (mesial of canine to mesial retromolar pad)
Occluso-gingival
- Resting tongue
- Resting lower lip
- Modiolus
- Half to 2/3 retromolar pad area
