Exam Flashcards
VDO
- The distance between two selected anatomic or points
- usually one on the tip of the nose and the other upon the chin
- one on a fixed and one on a movable member.
freeway space
Inreocclusal rest space
The difference between the vertical dimension of rest **
and the vertical dimension while in occlusion(VDO).**
Methods for determining VDO
Mechanical = pre existing extraction records
facila measurements
ridge relations
existing dentures
Physiological
- Rest position = adjust rims
- Phonetics = assessed at try in
- Asthetics = patient guided
- swollowing threshold =
- Tactile sense = comfort
phonetics
Alveolar sounds = tip of tongue to anterior palate
Sibilants = incisors touch
Labiodental = upper incisors on lower lip
linguodental = tip of tongue protrudes
bilabial = lips contact
Zarbs test for VDO
- Judge overall facial support.
- Observe the space between rims when jaws are at rest.
- Two-dot technique (measuring in occlusion and at rest).
- Observe “s” sound – the average speaking space.
Mouthguards
Deciduous = Average mouth 2 layers 2mm+2mm
Permanent = Average mouth 2 layers 4mm+2mm
Heavy contact sport 3 layers 2mm+4mm+2mm
Boxing = Average mouth Bi-Maxillary Mouth Guard
Large mouth follow secondary dentition rules
Rules of mouthguards
- Must not impact on breathing
- Made to patients correct MMR
- Should be comfortable
- Must no be too thick
- dont impinge on frenums
- dont overextend
- not too think
- not past 6’s
