Action Verb
Linking Verb - Link/join the subject of a sentence to the rest of a sentence (is, being, was, are, were, becomes, seems)
Adverb
Describes verb or adjective
Mostly ends in -ly (quickly)
Preposition
Connect another word in a sentence to a noun or pronoun
Tell timing, location, direction (before, under, around)
Prepositional phrase - start with preposition, end with object of preposition
Object of preposition is always a noun
Conjunction
Joins words or groups of words together
Coordinating Conjunction - FANBOYS
Coorelative Conjunction - pairs
(Both/and, either/or, not only, but also)
Subordinating Conjunction - connects adverb clauses to main clauses (even though, because)
Subject
Noun (what the sentence is about)
Simple subject - just one word
Complete subject - entire subject phrase
Ex - The school principal is ready for Christmas break
Ex - Michael Jordan is cool.
Direct Object
Noun or pronoun that receives the action of the verb
Who? What?
Indirect Object
Noun or pronoun that follows the action verb
To whom? For whom? To what? For what?
Subject, verb, indirect object, direct object
Adjective Phrase
Prepositional phrases that modify a noun or pronoun
What kind? Which one?
Ex - The bird on the stamp is an eagle
Adverb Phrase
Prepositional phrase that modifies a verb/adjective
Ex - I put the stamp on the letter
Where?
Subordinate Clause
Group of words with subject/verb, but cannot stand alone
Ex - After he finished school
Independent Clause
Group of words with subject/verb, but can stand alone
Ex - Sam went to the park
Simple Sentence
Has a subject and verb/basic sentence
Ex - I like cheese
Compound Sentence
Have 2 independent clauses joined by a conjunction
Ex - I like cheese, and I like butter
Complex Sentence
Contains 1 independent and at least 1 dependent clause
Ex - Because the soup was too cold, I warmed it in the microwave.
Compound-Complex Sentence
Contains 2 or more independent clauses and at least 1 independent clause
Ex - The baby slept and dreamed, and the mother watched while the rain fell.
