Exam Flashcards
What are the types of frames?
PLASTIC
METAL
RIMLESS
COMBINATION
What should you look for on the frames?
Frame materials that will not shrink
Frame materials that shrink beyond
Repair when normal heat is applied
Frame materials that accept NO HEAT
What are the PLASTIC frame materials?
Zylonite/Zyl (Cellulose Acetate) Carbon Fiber Nylon (Cellulose Acetate Propionate) Optyl (Epoxy Resin) Polycarbonate Polyamide/Copolyamide
Whats a disadvantage of using Zylonite/Zyl?
They can combust itself when heating
Thts why we have Acetate instead of NITRATE (which is what was used before)
What is NYLON?
it is cellulose Acetate Propionate
what is Optyl made out of?
Epoxy Resin
What is ZYLONITE (ZYL)
Man made material
Produced from cotton plant substance cellulose
Stabilizers and Plasticizers added for stability
Either injection molded or block cut
what are the benefits of ZYL
light weight
Easily colored
It lends itself to unlimited designs
What are drawbacks of ZYL
less durable than metal
aging and sun exposure can slightly decrease its strength
Plasticizers?
they are the pitted area right around the frame, thts the plasticizers that is coming to the surface that has been used for stability, they are leaking toward teh surface of the frame causing discoloration
What is CARBON FIBER?
High tech material made of extremely thin carbon fibers twisted together in a crystal alignment
What are BENEFITS OF CARBON FIBER?
Very light weight Extremely Flexible Strong and durable Has the strength of Metal Frames thin as metal frames Resistant to scratching and marring
What are DRAWBACKS?
Can be expensive
INSERT LENSES COLD (no salt pan or air warmer )
WHAT IS NYLON?
form of cellulose acetate used for sports and performance sunwear
What are the BENEFITS OF NYLON
Ideal for wrap around shapes
can be made thinner vs zyl
HYPOALLERGENIC
which one is HYPOALLERGENIC?
NYLON
- why?
- because it cause any create or cause allergies, it is good for pts that are good for NICKEL ALLERGIES, ASTHMA,
- Pts with skin conditions such as cerrosis, ECZEMA DERMATITIS, DANDRUFF, dry skin
What are DRAWBACKS OF NYLON?
you have to use hot water to heat it up
What is OPTYL AKA EPOXY RESIN
WIEGHTS 30% less than Zyl and HYPOALLERGENIC
it will not shrink
it has memory
Frame maintains adjustment until reheated
it will not burn or blister from overheating
you will not see a wire that is running in the frame
What are the features of POLYCARBONATE?
- Used PRIMARY ON SPORTS AND SAFETY
- Frames are not adjustable
- they usually have elastic straps and rubber bridge pieces for wearing comfort
- Do not use acetone on frame it will MELT THE LENSES
What are the features of POLYAMIDE/COPOLYAMIDE
A combination of nylons/plasticizers with reduced weight and great flexiblity
HYPOALLERGENIC
Lenses MUST BE COLD INSERTED
Avoid salt pans and heat will shrink frame
which frames are HYPOALLERGENIC?
1) NYLON
2) OPTYL
3) POLYAMIDE / CO-POLYAMIDE
which frames are cold inserted?
Polyamide
Carbon fiber
