cultural identity
person’s identity, or their self-conception and self-perception, and is related to nationality, ethnicity, religion, social class, generation, locality or any kind of social group that has its own distinct culture.
acculturation
process of cultural change which allows the individuals to integrate elements of other cultures as they develop their new identities
assimilation
process of letting go of one’s culture of origin while incorporating norms and influences of the majority or dominant culture
enculturation
recaptures the culture of origin by learning about it, identifying with it, and reinforcing its basic norms and values
racism
prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against a person or people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group
privilege
unlearned advantages of a special group membership
classism
working class people and the poor are inarticulate and lack the education thus need leadership and guidance of the educated
empathy
capacity to understand or feel what another person is experiencing from within their frame of reference

deculturalization
unequal treatment of individuals based on their membership in a particular cultural group, rather than on their individual qualities
projection
processes through which people minimize or deny undesirable characteristics that they possess by exaggerating the same characteristics in someone from a different cultural group
