Apraxia
Inability to use objects properly or inability to carry out learned sequential movements or commands.
Agnosia
Loss of comprehension of auditory, visual or other sensations although sensory sphere is intact (can’t recognize objects).
Dysphagia
Inability to swallow or difficulty in swallowing.
Dysphasia
Difficulty r/t comprehension or impairment of speech (use of language) resulting from a brain lesion.
Dysarthria
Difficulty and defective speech due to impairment of tongue or muscles essential to speech.
Hemiplegia
Paralysis on one half of the body.
Paraplegic
Paralysis of lower portion of the body and of both legs.
Quadraplegic (Also called Tetraplegic)
Paralysis of upper body and lower legs.
Hemiparesis
Paralysis on one side of the body only.
Agraphia
loss in ability to write
Alexia
loss in ability to read…doesnt understand or see words
Hemianopia
limited vision in half of the visual field
Aphasia
loss of ability to understand or express speech, caused by brain damage.
Types: receptive, expressive, mixed, global
Receptive aphasia + interventions
Unable to comprehend speech (Wernike’s area)
INTERVENTIONS: short/simple talk and details use gestures/point be patient remove distractions repeat, repeat
Expressive aphasia + interventions
Comprehend speech but can’t respond back with speech (broca’s area)
INTERVENTIONS: be patient, let them speak one question at a time be direct and ask simple questions communication board
