Exam 1 review Flashcards
What is a oblique ridge?
It is a special kind of transverse ridge. The union of a triangular ridge and cusp ridge on the opposite side of tooth.
- Not PURE transverse ridges because both ridges are NOT triangular ridges
What is a sulcus?
A depression or valley or space on the surface of a tooth between two ridges and/or cusps of which the inclines meet at an angle.
- It is NOT a groove. The groove is found at the bottom of the sulcus
First evidence of calcification has occurred by how many weeks in utero?
By 20 weeks
What tooth is the last primary tooth to begin calcification and when does it occur?
Primary Maxillary second molar (Tooth A, J)
This occurs at 19 weeks in utero
Which primary tooth is the last to exfoliate? When does this occur?
Primary maxillary second molar. This occurs at 11 years. This tooth is replaced by the permanent maxillary second premolar
Which are the first permanent teeth to erupt? When does this occur?
Maxillary and Mandibular 1st Molar
Occurs at 6 years
Which teeth have the first permanent roots to completely form? And when does this occur?
Maxillary 1st molar, Mandibular Central Incisor, & Mandibular 1st molar
This occurs at 9 years
By what age have permanent incisor tooth roots completely formed?
By 11 years of age
What are the proximal contact areas in mandibular anterior teeth?
- Midline, Distal of central, mesial of lateral, distal of lateral, mesial of canine, distal of canine
Midline: Incisal third Distal of Central: Incisal third Mesial of Lateral: Incisal third Distal of Lateral: Incisal third Mesial of Canine: Incisal third Distal of Canine: Middle third
What is the Tuberculum Intermedium and in what two places can it be exhibited?
Exhibited only on Permanent mandibular molars
- Is considered an overdevelopment of either the distal cusp ridge of the mesiolingual cusp or the mesial cusp ridge of the distolingual cusp
At what point is the anterior proximal contact most incisal?
Most incisal at the midline
Height of Contour: Mandibular arch
What is the height of all facial surfaces and what third is it located?
0.5 mm located in the cervical third
Height of Contour: Mandibular arch
What is the height of the mandibular anterior teeth on the lingual surface and what third is it located?
0.5 mm located in the cervical third
Height of Contour: Mandibular arch
What is the height of the mandibular first premolar teeth on the lingual surface and what third is it located?
0.5 mm located in the middle third
Height of Contour: Mandibular arch
What is the height of the mandibular 2nd premolar teeth on the lingual surface and what third is it located?
0.75 mm located in the middle third
Height of Contour: Mandibular arch
What is the height of the mandibular molar teeth on the lingual surface and what third is it located?
1 mm located in the middle third
Which primary teeth are the first to begin calcification and when does this occur?
Maxillary and Mandibular central incisors
- Occurs at 14 weeks in utero
Which primary teeth are the first to exfoliate and when does this occur?
Maxillary and mandibular central incisors
- Occurs at 6.5 years
What is the ideal plane of occlusion?
The ideal plane is not flat.
- A curved plane permits maximum use of tooth contacts during function
- The proper plane of occlusion will permit simultaneous functional contacts to occur in controlled areas of the dental arch
Why is a flat plane not good for occlusion?
A flat plane allows for too many contacts on most posterior teeth on both sides of the mouth.
What are oblique fibers useful for as a periodontal fiber?
Oblique fibers are known to resist forceful impaction of a tooth into the alveolus, consistent with many types of trauma.
What are transseptal fibers helpful for?
Transseptal fibers help to maintain contiguous proximal contact
Can an embrasure space exist even in situations when there is a diastema between proximal contact?
Yes. It is not necessary for the adjoining teeth to physically touch each other in order for the embrasures to be exhibited
How many embrasures are produced in an ideal embrasure?
In an ideal embrasure construct, every contact area produces four embrasures that are continuous and contiguous with each other.
T or F, Lingual embrasures on the maxillary first molar are larger than their respective facial embrasures because the crown tapers to the facial
False, They are smaller
Is the primary crown enamel thinner or thicker than a permanent crown?
Thinner and has consistent depth
Is the dentin thicker or thinner in permanent teeth compared to a primary tooth?
The dentin thickness is thicker in permanent and thinner in primary teeth
Are the pulp chambers larger or smaller in proportion to the respective size of the tooth in primary teeth compared to permanent teeth?
Primary teeth have pulp horns that are high and the pulp chambers are proportionately larger
Do the pulp horns in primary teeth extend taller than permanent molars?
Yes, primary pulp horns protrude higher underneath crown heights because their dentin thickness is minimal, compared to permanent teeth
Explain the incisal ridge in the primary maxillary lateral incisor
It is curved toward the facial surface
Which cusp is more prominent from the lingual view on the primary maxillary first molar?
The mesiolingual cusp is more prominent on the lingual surface than the distolingual cusp. The distolingual cusp, if visible, is SMALL
Which cusp is larger and taller on the primary mandibular first molar?
The mesiofacial cusp is larger and taller than the distofacial cusp
