Exam 1 Review Flashcards
Evolution
Key component: change
Change in a population
Population
Group of organisms that are similar enough to put together
What are the fundamental categories of change in any population?
Transformational Process: needs to have fundamental change in individual organisms
Variational Process: does not change individual elements just separate them.
What are three basic types of change that effect change in a biological population?
- Natural Selection: variational process
- Genetic Drift: variational process
- Mutation: transformational process
Natural Selection
Second major force that can cause changes. No impact on individuals, but it does filter out some. Barrier for some to pass their genes.- loss of diversity
Genetic Drift
Randomly deciding who gets to reproduce. Less predictability- random chance
Mutation
These three basic types of change in biological populations fall into what fundamental category of change?
Mutation: ultimate source of all genetic diversity all fall under there: hair texture, skin color, etc…
Are humans descended from chimpanzees?
With which of the following do humans share a common ancestor? Chimpanzees, Lizards, Fish, Trees, Mushrooms, Algae, Bacteria
What is Science? How does it operate? What are its strengths and weaknesses?
Science
Theory
Hypothesis
Creationism, Be familiar with four specific categories of creationism
