- vasoconstriction of blood vessels, causes nasal turbinate to shrink, opens nasal passage and relieves nasal congestion
Antitussives
codeine, dextromethorphan (Delsym), benzonate (Tessalon)
- suppresses the cough reflex in the brain
- adverse effects: opioid related
Expectorants
guaifenesin (Mucinex)
- reduce surface tension of secretions; thins thick mucous
Mucolytics
acetylcysteine (Acetadote OR Mucamyst)
- decreases thickness (viscosity) of mucous secretions
- acetaminophen overdose
- smells like rotten eggs
Antihistamines 1st Generation/Sedating
diphenhydramine (Benadryl) and dramamine
Antihistamines 2nd Generation/ Non-Sedating
cetrizine (Zyrtec), loratadine (Claritin), fexofenadine (Allegra), and deslortadine (Clarinex)
- minimal anticholinergic effects
- effects longer lasting so dosed once a day
