psychoanalytic perspective
we repress unacceptable desires and thoughts, unconscious motives

Illogical, sponteous needs driven by needs or desires. Present with us since birth
Ego
Regulates the ID. Common sense and logic
Superego
The morals. If you want to steal, you ID might one you to, but the superego knows this is morally wrong. If you do, superego produces guilt.

Psychodynamic Theory

How does this differ from Freuds theory
Disagrees that we are primarily motivated by sexual desires, disagreed that personality stemmed from childhood experience, not as pessimistic

focused on the ways healthy people
strive for self-actualization and self-
transcendence

Trait theory and its criticisms
Personality can be broken down into a bunch of traits, but human personality is not really explained and the how and why we develop these traits is not explained
Social Congnititve perspective
emphasizes conscious thought processes, self-regulation,
and the importance of situational influences. Traits may do a good job describing average behavior, but situations also affect behavior. The more comfy you are, the more your traits come out.
