VBAC
VAGINAL BIRTH AFTER CESAREAN SECTION
C/S
CESAREAN SECTION
MI
MEMBRANES INTACT – amniotic sac intact
ROM
RUPTURE OF MEMBRANES – rupture of the amniotic sac
PROM
PREMATURE RUPTURE OF MEMBRANES – rupture of the amniotic sac before the onset of true labor, regardless of the length of gestation. PROM may be a normal occurrence that precedes term birth at 38 weeks or later, even if labor induction is needed to initiate labor.
PPROM
PRETERM PREMATURE RUPTURE OF MEMBRANES – membranes ruptured earlier than the 37th week of gestation, with or without contractions. PPROM is often associated with preterm labor, with the greatest risks from preterm birth occurring before completing 34 weeks of gestation.
SROM
SPONTANEOUS RUPTURE OF MEMBRANES – rupture of the amniotic sac on its own
AROM
ARTIFICIAL RUPTURE OF MEMBRANES (amniotomy) - artificial rupture of the amniotic sac; is often done in conjunction with induction or stimulation of labor or to permit internal electronic fetal monitoring. An amnihook is commonly used to perforate the amniotic sac. Although a common procedure, amniotomy implies a commitment to delivery.
UC’S
UTERINE CONTRACTIONS – during the first stage of labor (onset through full cervical dilation), uterine contractions are the primary force moving the fetus through the maternal pelvis.
PTL
PRETERM LABOR – begins after the 20th week but before the end of the 37th week of pregnancy
GR
GRAVIDA – refers to woman who is or has been pregnant regardless of the duration of pregnancy
P
PARA – refers to the number of pregnancies that have ended at 20 or more weeks, regardless of whether the infant was born alive or was stillborn.
AB
ABORTION - loss of pregnancy before the fetus is viable, that is, before it is capable of living outside of the uterus
SAB
SPONTANEOUS ABORTION – denotes termination of a pregnancy without action taken by the woman or any other person
TAB
THERAPEUTIC ABORTION – is usually performed to preserve the health of the mother, to prevent the birth of an infant with severe birth defects, or to end a pregnancy caused by rape or incest.
LMP
LAST MENSTRUAL PERIOD
EDD
same as
EDC
ESTIMATED DATE OF DELIVERY
ESTIMATED DATE OF CONFINEMENT
(Essentially referred to synonymously.)
BPM
BEATS PER MINUTE
OA
OCCIPUT ANTERIOR – birth position in which the back of the infant’s head is towards the mother’s anterior (front side)
OP
OCCIPUT POSTERIOR – birth position in which the back on the infant’s head is towards the mother’s posterior (back)
CPD
CEPHALOPELVIC DISPROPORTION – fetal head size that is too large to fit through maternal pelvis
LDRP
LABOR, DELIVERY, RECOVERY AND POSTPARTUM - rooms in which labor, delivery, recovery, and postpartum occur in one setting and the mother and infant remain in that room until discharge
NST
NON STRESS TEST – a method for evaluating fetal status during the antepartum period by observing for accelerations of the fetal heart rate
CST
CONTRACTION STRESS TEST – method for evaluating fetal status during the antepartum period by observing the response of the fetal heart to intermittent stress of induced uterine contractions. AKA oxytocin challenge test (OCT)
BTL
BILATERAL TUBAL LIGATION – surgery involving cutting or occluding the fallopian tubes to prevent fertilization
EFM
ELECTRONIC FETAL MONITORING – a method of intrapartum surveillance which measures fetal heart rate (FHR) and uterine activity
