Exam 1 Nsci Flashcards
Geocentric Model
- Earth is the center of the universe.
- sun, planets, and stars orbit around the earth
Retrograde Motion
Retrograde motion was when planets would move westward for a few weeks rather than eastward
We see apparent retrograde motion when we pass by a planet in its orbit
Heliocentric model
Sun is the center of the universe.
- this makes retrograde motion easy to understand
Hallmark of Science # 1
Modern science seems explanations for deserved phenomena that rely solely on natural causes.
PROBLEM: what is meant by the word natural ?
Hallmark of Science #2
Science progresses through the creation and testing of models of nature that explain the observations as simply as possible
What is Occam’s Razor ?
Occam’s Razor is when there is more than one possible explanation, choose the simplest
Hallmark of Science #3
Hallmarks Science #3 is a scientific model must make testable predictions about natural phenomena that would force us to revise or abandon the model if the predictions do not agree with observations.
-it has to tell you something that you don’t already know. Otherwise, Occams’s Razor leaves us with nothing
What is a hypothesis?
Hypothesis is an educated guess
What is a Theory?
Theory has a different meaning in science than in everyday life .
- theory is not the same as hypothesis
- theory explains a wide variety of observations with a few simple principles
- theory is supported by a large compelling body of evidence
- theory has not failed any crucial test of its validity

What is Astronomical Unit ?
Is the average distance between the earth and the sun .
-150 million kilometers
What is a Star ?
A star is a ball of hot gas that glows because of its high temperature .
- the sun appears to be bright because it’s closer
