Magnesium Sulfate (preterm labor)
- Used to inhibit contractions during preterm labor
- helps protect the newborns brain
Magnesium Sulfate (pre-eclampsia)
Treatment, prevention, and reduction of risk for seizures in women with pre-eclampsia
Raises the seizure threshold and lowers blood pressure.
Oxytocin (Pitocin)
Induction of labor at term
Stimulates and improves uterine contractions
Can reduce bleeding after childbirth
Stimulates milk let down reflex
Terbutaline (Brethine)
Used to stop or delay preterm labor
Dinoprostone (Cervidil)
Used to prepare the cervix for the induction of labor
Softens the cervix
Carboprost (Hemabate)
Used to treat severe postpartum hemorrhage
Avoid use in asthmatics
Methylergonovine (Methergine)
Administered in the postpartum period to help deliver the placenta
Helps control postpartum bleeding
Avoid use in clients with HTN
Misoprostol (Cytotec)
Used to soften cervix
First trimester abortions
Tranexamic acid
Treatment of cyclic menorrhagia, bleeding prophylaxis
Fentanyl
Treatment of pain during labor and delivery
Short half life means it can be given closer to delivery
Penicillin
Given IV during labor to prevent infection, especially Group B Strep
Ondansetron
Nausea and vomiting
hyperemesis gravidarum
Betamethasone
Given to women at risk for preterm delivery
Speeds up lung development in preterm baby
Methotrexate
Given for ectopic pregnancy

Indomethacin
Delays labor and decreases contractions
Can be used to treat patent ductus arteriosus
