an elected officer without medical training whose chief duty is to investigate questionable deaths
Cot
a portable stretcher commonly employed in a transfer vehicle for the moving of the deceased
Death certificate
a legal document containing vital statistics, disposition and final medical info pertaining to the deceased
Death notice
a newspaper item publicizing the death of a person and giving service details. In some parts of the U.S. it can contain the same info as an obituary

Survivor(s)
one who outlives another person or an event.
Transfer of Remains
the moving of the dead human body from the place of death to the funeral establishment or other designated place.
Transfer vehicle
the automobile generally used for transporting the uncasketed dead human body from the place of death to the mortuary.
Veteran
one who has served a prescribed period of time with the armed forces, no longer an active member of the armed forces.
Vital statistics
data concerning birth, marriage, divorce, sickness and death.
Wake
historically, a watch kept over the deceased; an all-night vigil.
Exigent Circumstances
situation requiring immediate action or urgency; FTC recognizes that funeral provider might embalm without permission
Federal Trade Commission (FTC)
agency of federal government created in 1914 to promote free and fair competition by prevention of trade restraints, price fixing, false advertising and other unfair methods of competition.
Funeral Goods
goods which are sold or offered for sale directly to the public for use in connection with funeral services
Funeral Provider
any person, partnership or corporation that sells or offers to sell BOTH funeral goods and funeral services to the public.
General price list (GPL) #2
printed or typewritten list of goods and services offered for sale by a funeral provider with retail prices. It is considered the keystone of the Funeral Rule.
Statement of Funeral Goods and Services Selected
itemized written statement provided for retention to each person who arranges a funeral or other disposition. It must include the goods and services selected and prices paid for each, itemization of cash advance items and the total cost.
Triggering Event
occurrence of situation that requires certain action; (i.e.) the event for giving out the GPL is a face-to-face meeting.
