exam 1 Flashcards
social psychology definition
attempts to scientifically understand the way in which our behaviors, thoughts, and feelings are influenced by others
position in the social sciences
bridge discipline between Sociology and Psychology
Theories are usually evaluated in terms of a number of criteria:;
Testability
Simplicity
Generativity
Sampling
process by which researches decide what to observe.
sampling bias
occurs when the persons in the sample are systematically different from the population.
random sampling
every member of the population is given an equal chance of being in the sample.
representative sampling
the research deliberately constructs a sample that reflects (represents) the population
convenience sampling
the research chooses persons for the sample that are available and willing to participate.
hypothesis
testable questions that are usually derived from theory
experiment has 3 things
Independent Variables Dependent Variables Random Assignment
independent variable
manipulated
dependent variablr
observed by the experimenter
random assignment
every person in the sample has been given an equal chance of ending up at the different levels of the independent variable
Quasi Experimental Research
resembles true experimental research but the research can not:
- Randomly assignment participants
- Control the independent variable
Correlational Research
Involves observing naturally occurring variations in groups of variables.
-Correlations can not be used to demonstrate causation.
correlation coefficients
The most commonly use statistic used to represent covariation is correlation
The coefficient associated with correlation is “r”
interpreting coefficients
range is +1 to -1
\+1 = perfect positive relationship -1 = perfect negative 0 = no relationship
limits of correlations
reverse causation
third variable explanantions
attitude
general evaluation based on cognition and affect
affect
feeling or emotion
cognition
set of information or beliefs
attitude scales
self report measures
thurstone scale
3 steps
- Developing statements.
- Rating the statements
- Evaluating the attitude object
semantic differential
requires participants to rate the attitude object on bipolar scales
one item rating scale
requires participants to rate the attitude object on one scale
electrodermal response
measures small changes in the amount of perspiration on the skin
pupil response
-Examines small changes in the size of the pupil
dialtion indicates positive reaction
constriction indicates negative reaction
Facial Electromyograph
Measures increased activation of muscles associated with smiling and frowning
most social psychologists work in
academia
