Definition of human services
Human Services is a broad term that includes services and programs provided to meet the needs of a person, family or an entire communit
Early techniques used to treat deviance
They would do a technique used to rid a person of evil spirits in which a hole was drilled into the skull of the after life a person to release evil spirits it was used because at time it was “believed” evil spirits inhabit a persons brain and caused deviant behaviors called now psychotic delusions and hallucinations.
Ethical principals in human services
CONFIDENTIALITY
Confidentiality: privilege- who owns the case 18yr old gets own case and 18yr and below parents can because their a minor don’t have privilege
Minors- who have been sexually abuse etc, is the only thing that isn’t going to be an exception and that isn’t going to be confidential.
Exceptions: child abuse, elder abuse, disabled abuse adult abuse, vulnerable adult population, danger to self and others such as suicide and homicide.
Three types of human services agencies
Private non profit: Nami, Csp, Ast
Private for public: Kaiser
Public: schools, police, & fire departments
Interventions (Micro)
Working with an individual

What are the three levels of interventions ?
Primary
Secondary
Tertiary
Primary interventions
Efforts to prevent the occurrence of a disorder or a problem by counteracting circumstances or risk factors that could contribute to or cause the disorder or problem.
Ex: DARE, Project head start for low income disadvantages preschoolers.
Secondary intervention
Include efforts to assist people who have already demonstrated early signs of dysfunction or problmatic behaviors or to reduce the duration of the problem
Ex: crisis may arise as marriage, adolescent rebellion, birth of a baby.
Crisis is unexpected tramautic events such as rape, divorce, unemployment, death diagnosis of an illness or extreme natural or human caused disasters such as 9/11 & Hurrican Katrina
Crisis intervention prevent people from chronic problems to maintain functioning in as many areas as possible.
Tertiary intervention
People who suffer from chronic problems & ; have difficulties caring for themselves
Ex: long term psychatric hospitals, ongoing psychotherapy, attendance at Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, incarceration & indefine periods @ residential faculties.
Dual Relationships
human service workers maintain clear boundaries with their clients and a professional relationship. Along with counselors, social workers and probation officers and any type of human service worker. To keep their relationship strictly professional. The primary focus is to keep a ethical standard and that has to do with the prevention of exploration of clients. Because people are seeking help and they are vulnerable and can easily manipulated and some human service workers can use clients to meet their own personal need.
Public
schools, police, & fire departments
Agencies funded by government taxes at the city, country, state, or federal level. Sometimes consumers pay to receive services. City level aganekces include senior centers, park and recreation centers, and gang units in police departments. At country level human sevcies agencies include the department of social services and welfare, and the department of mental and behavioral health and corrections. Also rehabilitation, and state regional centers for developmentally disabled person and department is social security are in place in which human service employers are employed. Nonprofit for public or private.
Private for public
Kaiser
Agencies funded by consumer fees and usually operate as a for profit model such as hospitals or convalescent homes ( someone recovering from an illness releated rest and recovery ). Clinicians also engage in private practice as mental health counselors. Ex. Health maintain organizations ( HMOs) began to replace private and medical and mental health insurance provide educational information and treatment for substance abuse. They tend to utilize more professional level workers to operate for public agencies. They focus on mental and behavioral health, social welfare, and education, correctional needs
Private non profit

Bureaucratic organization that is governed by an elected, volunteer board of directors employing professional, paraprofessional, and volunteer staff to provide ongoing services to its clients. Receives both private and government grants. The first type of nonprofit face to face services to various client populations. By volunteers and interns with a few paid administrators to service victi of domestic violence, child abuse, and rape, and seriously ill people with limited income, and people battling alcoholism and other addictions. The second type of nonprofit is more of an administrative organization focusing on a specific cause such as American hert asociativo, united way. They provide community education and distribute money to direct service organizations.
