Exam 1 Flashcards
Skepticism
Thoughtful questioning, judging the validity of a claim based on objective EMPIRICAL evidence
Why do people believe weird things?
many claims use scientific jargon, bold statements are compelling, emotional anecdotes tell a good story
Pseudoscience
Treats phenomena that do not involve the hallmarks of the scientific method as though they were scientific (dressed-up, subjective information); appears to be science, but does not include the objectivity of science
Antiscience
Rejection of science-based methods/findings as a means of producing useful knowledge.
Science requires
Direct, objective observation and measurement of phenomena, •Systematic arrangement (manipulation) of events, •(control) Procedures to rule out alternative explanations, •Repeated demonstrations (replications)•Critical peer review
Positive/Negative Reinf
Some stimulus change, following a behavior, which results in increased probability of that behavior occurring again in the future under similar conditio
7 Dimensions of ABA
1. Applied Behavioral Analytical Technological Conceptual Systems Effective Generality
Single-Subject Research Design
demonstration of experimental control through QUANTITATIVE research; participants serve as their own control = baseline logic
Group Designs
The purpose is to decribe whether an IV on AVERAGE is effective for a specific POPULATION (involves a larger number of indiviudals divided between 2 or more conditions)
Qualitative Research Approach
to provide a detailed account of a CASE STUDY or event; field notes, direct observations audio and video recordings interviews and questionnaires
Behavior Analytic Research should
describe target behaviors of study (dependent variable) predict the impact of the IV on the DV test prediction (verificiation) REPLICATE PREDICT CONTROL
Goals of ABA research
Advance the science of bx, make SOCIALLY SIGNIFICANT behavior change, produce “scientist-practitioners” improve and develop best evidence-based practices
Inductive Analysis
SPECIFIC –> GENERAL; describes trends and themes in data BEFORE forming theory
Deductive
GENERAL –> SPECIFIC; hypothesis formed PRIOR to conducting the study to test a theory; theories are strengthened through confirmation of the hypothesis
Applied
Dealing w/ problems of social importance
