Exam 1 Flashcards
Epi is…
Public health basic science studies distribution and determinants of health related states or events (not just diseases)
Public Health Surv
portray ongoing patterns of disease occurrence, so investigations, control and prevention measures can be developed and applied.
- EX: Reportable disease registries
- Data interpretation
Field investigation
determine sources/vehicles of disease; to simply learn more about the natural history, clinical spectrum, descriptive epi (1st 3 Ws) and risk factors of disease
-this is before determining what interventions may be appropriate
Analytical studies
advance the information (hypothesis) generated by descriptive epi techniques
- hallmark of analytical studies use of a comparison group
- design, conduct. analysis, interpretation & communication of research data and findings
Evaluation
systematically and objectively determine relevance, effectiveness, efficiency and impact of activities
Linkages
collaberate/communicate with other health and healthcare profesionals (& the public themselves)
Policy Development
provide input, testimony, recomendations regarding disease control and prevention strategies, reportable disease regulations and health care policy
Passive Surveillance system
relies on healthcare sustem to follow regulations on required reportable disease/conditions
Active surv. system
Public health officials go into communities to search for new disease/condition cases
Syndromic Surv Syetem
looks for pre defined signs/symptoms of patients related to trackable but rare diseases/conditions
-biosurveillance- human, animal, plant
Induction & Incubation
time btwn exposure & onset of disease
Latency
time btwn onset of disease and disease detection
Epidemic
occurrence of disease clearly in excess of normal expectancy
-community/period clearly defined
Outbreak
An epidemic limited to a localized inc. in the occurance of disease
-sometimes interchanged w “cluster”
Endemic
The constant presence of a diseae within a gien area or population in excess of normal levels in other areas
