Exam 1 Flashcards
Torque
torque=force*length of moment arm
think “the tendency of a force to rotate the body to which it is applied” measure in newton-meter or Nm
First - class lever
Muscle force (Mm or Maf and the resistive force (Mr or Mrf) are on opposite sides of the fulcrum
Second - class lever
Muscle force (Mm or Maf) and resistive force (Mr or Mrf) are on the same side of the fulcrum and Maf >Mrf
Function of the patella
lengthens the moment on the applied force
Fa
applied force
Fr
resistance force
Maf
(units used in length - meters) moment arm of applied force
Mrf
(units used is length) moment arm of resistance force
Mechanical advantage
Maf / Mrf
think “advantage gained by using a lever”
Third - class lever
muscle force (Mm or Maf) and resistive force (Mr or Mrf) are on the same side of the fulcrum Maf < Mrf
MA = 1
lever alters movement direction but does nothing to magnify either the effort or resistance force
MA > 1
torque is magnified by the effort force
MA < 1
a much greater force is required to overcome the resistance force
velocity
rapid force output = velocity
agonist, antagonist, synergist
agonist - prime mover
antagonist - working against the agonist
synergist - assisting the agonist
