It was originally applied to a message of victory in battle; when we proclaim victory in Jesus, we are proclaiming the gospel.
Synoptic Gospels
These are Matthew, Mark, and Luke. They have similar events and stories and are also in a similar sequence unlike John. ( John Omits marterial and also includes material that is not found in the synoptic Gospels.
Q
from the German word “Quelle, meaning “source.” This is a source said by some to have been used to account for about 250 verses of teaching material found in Matthew and Luke but not found in Mark.
Pharisees
Name probably came from an Aramaic term meaning separate and could be used to refer to the Pharisees as the “Separated ones”
Sadducees
Priestly aristocrats who theologically rejected almost everything the Pharisees believed. They did not believe in angels, spirits, the resurrection, the last judgement, life after death, divine providence, or a coming Messiah.
Essenes

Zealots
Agree with Pharisees but intolerant of being ruled politically by anyone other than God.
Apocalyptic Movement

Short Answer:
How is John’s gospel different than the synoptic gospels?
a. Johns Gospel is different than the synoptic gospels because of its omissions and Inclusions that are not found in the synoptic Gospels.
b. Omissions – John omits much material, important events such as Jesus temptation, transfiguration and the institution of the Lord’s supper, sermon on the mount, and the Lord’s prayer.
c. Inclusions not found in synoptic gospels – John 2-4 material, Jesus early Galilean ministry, visits to Jerusalem before the passion, resurrection of Lazarus in John 11, the extended farewell discourse in John 13-17.
- Some consider Mathew’s gospel to be the most systematic of the other gospels. Whether you agree or don’t agree, cite some examples of Matthew’s systematic theology from Bruner or another source of your choosing.
- chronology of 14 generations
- miracles lined together
- different controversies lumped one after the other in parable form
