This altarpiece is painted in tempera on wood in the Byzantine or maniera greca style. It depicts the stigmata as well as several scenes from the saint’s life.

The art of this period comprised scenes and forms that appeared relatively flat and highly stylized. Cimabue was a pioneer in the move towards naturalism, as his figures were depicted with rather more lifelike proportions and shading.

The figure at Jesus’ feet is St. Mary Magdalene, identifiable by the flowing blond hair. Mary is of course the woman holding his head. And the beardless young man with his arms outstretched is St. John the Evangelist.
Directly to the left of this image is a decorative border with Jonah being swallowed by the great fish. Typologically, Jonah’s three days in the fish refer to Christ’s in the tomb.

The Annunciation shows the archangel Gabriel entering the house of the Virgin Mary to communicate her that she will soon get pregnant.
The work is composed of a large central panel depicting the Annunciation, and two side panels with St. Ansanus (left), and female saint, generarally identified with St. Margaret or St. Maxima, in the right, and four tondoes in the cusps: Jeremiah, Ezechiel, Isiah and Daniel.
