noted for its intensity and raw sexuality, nude self portraits. the twisted body shades and the expressive line that characterize schiele’s paintings and drawing mark the artist as an early exponent of expressionism.

suggested to represent expressionist dancers. gestures could have inspired the scissor-like splayed finger motif. With his left shoulder pulled up, the artist defends himself against the viewer
